To engage your readers and inspire your writers, show them the slides on these famous authors who had birthdays in February such as Langston Hughes, Jerry Spinelli, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Charles Dickens, to name a few. Each slide tells a little about the classic author and their most famous works. This winter, engage them in reading and writing! Mother's Day Gift - Flower Pot Craftivity. Make a mum for mom for Mother's Day! Print out flower parts and flowerpot on cardstock. Students can write adjectives that describe their Mom on the orange flower petals, then cut out the pieces and assemble by gluing the petals on to the flower center, and then adding the stem and leaves. Students can decorate the flowerpot with their name, pictures, stickers, glitter, etc. and then attach the flower to the flowerpot. After flower is dry, laminate or cover with clear contact paper for durability, and trim. Write a message to mom on the flower pot. Give to mom on Mother's Day to make her smile! Includes black and white pages, MOM or MUM for flower center, and a list of Mother's Day adjectives to help students choose the ones that best describe their mothers.

Thanksgiving Writing - Countdown Cards. Fun Thanksgiving writing activity! Print and go quick wirtes or journal prompts forf November. Each card has a different theme for giving thanks. You can print these out and have your students write on them, or project them on a screen if you prefer. They can be used as journal prompts, task cards, literacy centers, or as a choice activity as well. This Thanksgiving, enjoy counting your blessings! Here's another idea: print them out on index cards and stick each one on the cover of a composition book. Then students write in the composition books and rotate them each day, so that each student gets to write in a different book each day. (Just ignore or cut off the dates) This way they also get to see what other students have written. (They can edit other entries, too.) You can also print them out on index cards and have students make a Thanksgiving Blessing Tree. After they write on the cards, punch a hole in them, string a colorful ribbon though, and hang from a tree!
